Cycling Slovenia - "The Julian Alps"

Slovenia, the Northern part of the former Yugoslavia, lies just south of Austria and east of Italy. The Julian Alps stretch along the northern border with Austria. Our tour starts in the capital of Ljubljana and takes in Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, the Soca Valley and the Vrsic Pass before returning past Mount Triglav to Ljubljana.

Day 1 - Ljubljana

Check out the lively street scene of Ljubljana. The old town is under the dramatic hill top castle and the cafes line either side of the Ljubljanica River. This is the perfect place to kick back and watch the world go by. Ljubljana is full of bike paths, making it easy to explore the city on two wheels.

Day 2 - Ljubljana - Lake Bled

We take the bike paths and some backroads northwest out of town. The ride is pretty flat until Rudno. There is a nice climb there before we descend down thru Kropa to Lake Bled. We stay very close to the Lake.  70k - Rated 2.6

Day 3 - Lake Bled to Lake Bohinj

This is an intentionally short day to allow time visit the Vintgar Gorge as well as explore the more remote Lake Bohinj area. It is possible to climb the road outside of Bohinj to a height of 2000 meters.  34-50k

Day 4 - Lake Bohinj to Tolmin

Today we have great views of Mount Triglav while we climb out of Bohinj thru Alpine forests. We then head east to Tolmin in the Soca Valley, the white water capital of Slovenia.  62k - Rated 2.6

Day 5 - Tolmin to Kranjska Gora

We ride up the Soca Valley always in sight of the river and always contemplating the massive Julian Alps which lay ahead of us for most of the day. This day culminates with the 50 switchbacks of the Vrsic Pass. You don't have to count them, they are numbered along with the altitude of each.  84k

Day 6 - Kranjska Gora to Lake Bled

We leave Kranjska Gora and ride along the northern edge of Triglav National Park and the cut south for a scenic backroad route to Ribno/Lake Bled.  39k

Day 7 - Bled to Ljubljana

We take quiet lanes out of Bled, but there is some final climbing to do on the way back to our final night in Ljubljana.  70k
